The Abandoned House Down the Lane

Background: Created for Ectocomp 2024 "Le Petit Mort" category (<4hrs) and "Spooky Adventure" sub theme. It is creepy but not too scary. CW: blood.

Story: You explore the spooky abandoned house down the lane. This was inspired by an overgrown empty lot on the Avenue where I grew up with my parents, and the warnings they gave me not to play there. When I was a little kid, I had a nightmare there was still a house there, with a scary witch. I also wanted to play with themes of our strange desire to break things, and on the other hand the care needed for the well-being of otherwise abandoned things and people.

How to play

• Type VERB NOUN and press ENTER to do things.
• You can GET or DROP some objects (e.g. GET ROCK) to add or remove them from your inventory.
• Commands can sometimes be shortened by typing (A) letter.
• Move with just (N)orth, (S)outh, (E)ast, (W)est, (U)p, (D)own.
• Check your (I)nventory.
• E(X)amine everything.
• (R)efresh to clear the screen.
• You can SAVE/LOAD (browser memory) or SAVEF/LOADF (save file).
• Type HELP to see this again in-game.
